Why this plateau?

Over nine mountains – in the tenth, over nine rivers - in the tenth, over nine lakes - in the tenth; through nine villages ... and that is Devetaki Plateau!

Fairy tales never mention the names of mountains, rivers, lakes or villages. That is why they are fairy tales. Otherwise, the beginning would be too verbose and particular for a story full of wonders. Certainly the narrator of at least one tale - whether that of the servant who became rich or of the magic herb that cures everything - meant Agatovo, Brestovo, Gorsko Slivovo, Devetaki, Kramolin, Krushuna, Kakrina, Karpachevo, Tepava and Chavdartsi. Villages of Devetaki Plateau.

These villages are located in three different communities - Letnitsa, Lovech and Sevlievo. However they are combined by one – the karst plateau situated in Northern Bulgaria, at the foot of the Balkan Mountain (Stara planina). The northwestern border of Devetaki plateau is clearly defined - shaped edge over Osam River and on the north it extends all the way to the Danube plain.

The plateau is plentiful of whirlpools, hollows, karst ponds, precipices and caves. These are all surface and underground karst manifestations - explored and unexplored, accessible and inaccessible. The rocks here are limestone and largest caves and cave complexes are precisely on the territory of Devetaki plateau.

Over nine caves – in the tenth...

The Devetashka cave, Garvanitsa cave near the village of Gorsko Slivovo,  Futyova cave and Ladder cave near the village of Karpachevo, Kanchova Varpina near the village of Tepava, Pogriz cave near the village of Brestovo, Lajenska cave near Chavdartsi and many more explored and unexplored underground creations of nature.

In the forests that stretch over one third of the territory of the plateau, disturbed only during hunting season, freely live deer, foxes, wolves, wild boars, and even wild cats. And if it appears to you that a hedgehog with a white bib serves otter, badger and ground squirrel, it means that you are in the Bulgarian version of "Alice in Wonderland". In fact, the waiter in this case is extremely rare and endangered mammal called white breast hedgehog.

The rocks of the Devetaki plateau are also teeming with life. There bathing in the sun live valuable and therefore protected amphibians and reptiles such as Aesculapian snake, southern crested newt, common pond turtle, Hermann's tortoise and many others.

When staring into the sky, you will surely find at least ten of all 82 species of birds nesting in the local trees and rocks and soaring above them - eagles and falcons, storks and cormorants, woodpeckers, bee-eaters, larks ...

Because of the many protected birds and animals, the Plateau lies within the boundaries of Natura 2000.

The territory of the Devetaki plateau is a meeting point of different cultures. The roots of some of the villages are Slavic, other - Thracian, others originated from the Roman era, or been found in the Middle Ages, and there are those born despite of the Turkish invasion in our lands.
